More than 13,000 canned and non-perishable food items completed one lap around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval and a $5,484 check was presented to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the successful conclusion of the “1 Lap, 1 Great Cause” food drive.

IMS began collecting food Oct. 19 in specially marked donation barrels at locations around greater Indianapolis to help Indiana families in need. The program was expanded due to strong public response, which included corporate and fan online donations that were presented to Gleaners by IMS Chairman of the Board Mari Hulman George.

“We’re very grateful to the wonderful outpouring of generosity by Hoosiers,” said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and chief executive officer. “The race against hunger never ends, and we encourage people to continue to donate regularly to great organizations like Gleaners who provide such vital services for Indiana families.”

Said Cindy Hubert, president and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank: “Gleaners provides support in central and southeastern Indiana, already having supplied 25 million pounds of food to hungry Hoosiers this year. This important donation from IMS will certainly help us meet the increasing need among Indiana's families.”

IMS and Gleaners want to recognize and thank the various corporate partners that helped make the “1 Lap, 1 Great Cause” food drive a success (in alphabetical order): 500 Festival, Adidas Reebok Group, Art Institute of Indianapolis, Bridgestone, Cardinal Fitness, Clabber Girl, Downtown City Market, Emmis Communications, ESL Spectrum Lighting Fixtures and Design, Georgetown Market, Hilton-Downtown Indianapolis, IUPUI, Just Marketing International, Key Bank, Knit Stop, Lids, Monarch Beverage, Red Gold, Speedway Schools, Town of Speedway, Whitehead Signs of Indianapolis, YMCA.

Ryan Hunter-Reay didn’t want to celebrate his win at Pocono last year. And he wasn’t alone. Points and trophies were duly awarded after the checkered flag flew at the 2-mile superspeedway, but in light of the accident that would claim the life of his teammate Justin Wilson the following day, Pocono 2015 is more a reminder of what IndyCar lost than anything its finishers gained.
