United Way and Indy Sports Organizations Announce "High $5 Challenge"

Stephanie Borlik, a Carmel Elementary second grade teacher and educator for the last two and a half decades, understands how important it is for children to receive a high-quality education, which is why she’s been a longtime supporter of United Way of Central Indiana. But she never imagined her donation would give her the opportunity to check off a bucket list item – going to the Super Bowl. Watch her reaction to learning the news!

Today, following on the heels of the Super Bowl winner announcement, the Indianapolis sports community joined forces to give more Hoosiers a chance to win big while fighting for their neighbors in Central Indiana. The High $5 Challenge allows anyone who donates at least $5 to United Way of Central Indiana from now until April 30, 2018 the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime professional sports experience prize package. The following sports packages are part of the High $5 Challenge:

  • IndyCar & Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Indy 500 package (May 27, 2018 in Speedway, IN)
  • IndyCar: Sonoma IndyCar Championship Finale package (Sept. 16, 2018 in Sonoma, CA)
  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway: NASCAR Brickyard 400 package (Sept. 9, 2018 in Speedway, IN)
  • Pacers Sports & Entertainment: 2019 NBA All-Star Game package (Feb. 17, 2019 in Charlotte, NC)
  • Indianapolis Indians: 2018 MLB All-Star Game package (July 17, 2018 in Washington, DC)
  • Indy Eleven: 2018 MLS All-Star Game package (Aug. 1, 2018 in Atlanta, GA)
  • Indy Fuel: 2019 NHL All-Star Game package (Date and Location TBD)

“We know of no other community across the country that has all its professional sports teams rallying for United Way,” said Mark Miles, co-chair of United Way’s 100th Anniversary Committee. “We thank the leaders at the Colts, Pacers, Indians, IndyCar, Indy Eleven, Indy Fuel and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for coming together to support our great community during this special anniversary year.”

In early May, United Way will draw seven winners who will have the opportunity to choose which sports package they would like based on the order in which their name was randomly selected. To enter, visit uwci.org and make a $5 donation between now and Apr. 30, 2018.

To be eligible to win, you must live in Indiana and donate between Jan. 25 - Apr. 30, 2018. If you’ve already given to United Way, you may make an additional one-time donation of at least $5 to have your name included in the drawing. Participants are also encouraged to share their best high fives on social media as part of this promotion.

Top 10 Moments of 2017 - #1: Alonsomania
Alonso showed plenty of humility and willingness to learn from all corners during the test. He appreciated both the history of IMS and the enormity of the task of trying to earn the second leg of his goal of wearing the Triple Crown of motorsport by winning the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans. Only 1966 Indianapolis 500 winner Graham Hill has achieved that feat.

Top 10 Moments of 2017 - #5: Cornelison Brings House Down
“Back Home Again in Indiana” is a short song with a long legacy at IMS. It’s not the national anthem. It’s not even the official state song of Indiana. But it has meant so much to so many people since Metropolitan Opera star James Melton started the tradition of singing the song on Race Morning before the Indianapolis 500 in 1946.
